It’s almost certain you’ll be asked a version of this question at your Consultant interview. Here’s how to prep your answer.
Preparing the answer and having your framework ready means that you have one question nailed before you even start.
Unfortunately, many of us don’t recognise this question when it’s being asked or don’t have a clear way to structure our answer.
Although we know this is coming up, we still don’t ace it:
- We forget to include some elements when we answer the question
- We don’t recognise the question because it’s being asked slightly differently
- We stick to the framework too rigidly and don’t adapt
By using the framework below as a guide, you will cover all the bases.
Step 1: Use the PERM framework (Personal, Experience, Research/Education, Management)
This framework covers all the key elements.
Prepare 2-3 points in each of these sections that are your key selling points. Rehearse including these points when you answer using PERM. Remember that you don’t have to use every part of PERM, just pick the parts that are relevant.
Step 2: Start with the ‘P’ for personal
Often we leave ‘personal’ till the end and then mention one of our hobbies.
This is a chance for you to connect with the panel at the start. Craft a two line story that is personal and related to why you’d be good at the job.
Step 3: Apply this framework to other questions too
It’s obvious when the question is ‘take me through your CV’ or ‘tell me why you should get this job’. However, PERM can be used for other questions too, like ‘what makes you a good educator?’. Be adaptable.
Prepare, practice, and be flexible.
Use PERM to answer the obvious questions, but keep it in mind to answer other questions too.
